3M Scotchcal

The Good and the bad, Cast Vinyl vs Calendered Vinyl

3M Scotchcal films are produced using a superior technology which produces a product called "cast vinyl". The old technology decorative films produced what is called "calendered vinyl".
Below is a brief description of the differences between these two methods.
Cast film is about half the thickness of calendered film
Cast film, as the name implies, is cast without tension and very little stress applied to it. As a result, film shrinkage is low
Calendered film, on the other hand, is made from a continuous web and stress is continually placed on the film in the direction of the moving web. The materials is actually pulled through the machine and this causes the problem of shrinkage during film life
The ingredients used in making cast films are of a higher quality than those used in calendered films. The result is a glossy film which offers extended durability and flexibility
Cast film is very thin and sits very close to the substrate and is therefore aesthetically superior. This factor, combined with the high quality 3M adhesive results in excellent durability.
Calendered films, due to their thickness, are more easily removed and hence less vandal resistant
The chemicals used in cast film manufacture also make them more durable and more chemically resistant. Chalking, or the breakdown of the surface, so that it takes in a dusty appearance, is not a problem with cast films, but is an issue with calendered films.
